Benicarló
Located on the shores of the Mediterranean, in the heart of the Costa del Azahar, Benicarló is a city with a rich maritime heritage and a historical legacy dating back to the Iberians.
What to See in Benicarló
Benicarló boasts an excellent monumental heritage, highlighted by the Church of San Bartolomé, a spectacular Baroque temple with an impressive façade.
Strolling through the old town, you'll find numerous stately homes that reveal the city's prosperous past. Be sure to pay special attention to the House of the Marquis of Benicarló and the old medieval prison.
Heading towards the coast, you'll come across the port, where Benicarló's maritime spirit is still kept alive. The best time to visit the port area is at sunset, when it becomes a bustling hub with fishing boats returning from their day at sea.
If you want to enjoy the beach during your visit, Benicarló offers options for all tastes. For an urban beach with all kinds of services, Playa del Morrongo is the ideal choice.
For a quieter, more natural option, Playa de la Caracola is one of Benicarló's most unique beaches. It is known for its wide sandy area and unbeatable views of Peñíscola. The beach stretches for 2 kilometres along the Vía Verde del Mar, a scenic walking and cycling route.
To the north of the port lies Playa de la Mar Xica Beach, a coastal strip with a different atmosphere compared to the large neighbouring beaches. The beach features areas of coarse sand with gravel and small stones. It offers a tranquil ambience and crystal-clear waters.
If you enjoy walking, don't miss the Vía Verde del Mar, which connects Benicarló with Peñíscola. This 7-kilometre route is enjoyable, offering excellent coastal views and fresh sea air.
Finally, although it's not a sightseeing spot, one of Benicarló's must-tries is its artichokes. Benicarló artichokes have a Protected Designation of Origin and can be found in countless restaurants throughout the year, especially from November to March.
If you visit the city in January, you can take part in the Artichoke Festival, a major culinary event where you can taste these local delicacies in all their forms.
