Oropesa del Mar
Oropesa del Mar perfectly combines its beautiful beaches and wide range of leisure activities with a surprisingly historic old town full of charm. It is known as one of the most popular destinations on the Costa del Azahar.
Let's Take a Look Back
Oropesa del Mar's history is shaped by its strategic location, which makes it a veritable balcony overlooking the Mediterranean. As a result, its Arab-origin castle was highly coveted and contested by important historical figures, including El Cid — the legendary Castilian warrior.
After Jamie I's Reconquest, the lands passed into the hands of the Knights Templar and later to the Order of Montesa.
In the 16th century, Barbary pirates became a constant threat. To protect the city from raids, an impressive network of watchtowers was built, shaping its appearance and giving it a distinctive character.
What to See in Oropesa del Mar
We begin our tour in the upper part of the city to explore its old town. It's a maze of narrow, steep streets full of charming corners, including the remains of the ancient city walls.
At the heart of the city, the ruins of Oropesa Castle can be found, an Arab-origin fortress that was largely destroyed during the Carlist Wars. Despite this, it's worth a short visit to step into the city's history while enjoying the best views from above.
Coming down the hill toward the sea, the marina area is the ideal place to stroll and admire the boats. There, next to a modern lighthouse, you’ll find the imposing Torre del Rey, a defensive tower built in 1413 to protect the city from pirates. The tower can be visited, offering fantastic sea views from its rooftop.
Oropesa is famous for its high-quality beaches with fine sand and clear, calm waters. Among the most famous are Playa de la Concha, situated in a golden sand bay with calm waters, and Playa Morro de Gos, a long stretch featuring fine sand lined with a lively promenade full of shops and restaurants.
If you enjoy walking or cycling, Vía Verde del Mar is a must. This beautiful 6-kilometer route follows the old railway line, connecting Oropesa and Benicasim. It's one of Spain's most beautiful cycling routes and offers spectacular views of the Mediterranean along the way.
