The history of Vinarós is closely tied to the sea and its strategic position.

During the Middle Ages, the port of Vinarós became one of the most important in the Mediterranean, serving as a crucial link for the export of wines and spirits from the Maestrazgo region.

Years later, during the Carlist Wars, Vinarós remained a highly contested enclave due to its valuable port, prompting the city to protect itself by building new walls, moats and bastions.

These times helped shape Vinarós into what it is today, a strong, resilient city that stands out on its own merits.

Exploring Vinarós

Beyond its beaches, Vinarós surprises visitors with its remarkable monumental heritage. The crown jewel is the Archpriestal Church of the Assumption, a 16th-century church-fortress that blends Gothic and Renaissance elements.

As you stroll through the centre, you'll come across the Vinarós Market, a modernist building that is perfect for soaking up the local atmosphere. Wandering through its stalls, you'll find a variety of local products, including, of course, the famous Vinarós prawns.

The fishing port is the origin, heart, and soul of Vinarós, so no visit would be complete without exploring it. The best time to visit is in the late afternoon, when the fishermen return with their boats after a day's work to auction off their catch at the fish market.

If you'd like to discover the coastline of Vinarós, don't miss its two large urban beaches: Fortí Beach and Fora del Forat Beach. These long stretches of fine golden sand offer every type of service and are connected by an endless seafront promenade.

Continuing along the coast, in the northern part of the city, you'll find a series of peaceful, charming natural coves, among which La Foradada and La Triador stand out.

Last but not least, one of the most popular activities is enjoying its excellent cuisine, with special mention to its renowned prawns, celebrated for their exceptional quality.
