Maestrazgo Mining Park

Maestrazgo Mining Park

Located in the heart of the Castellón mountains, the Mines of Culla take you on a journey into the depths of the earth. Here, you can discover a hidden treasure that blends industrial history, nature, and the authentic charm of inland villages.

Let's Take a Look Back

From the 1940s, rapid industrial development in Spain created a high demand for raw materials like iron. At that time, the mines in Culla became the economic engine of the region, and hundreds of workers labored in the tunnels using the most rudimentary methods to extract the ore.

The mines were worked tirelessly for many years, until cheaper foreign minerals made them unprofitable, and in 1960, they were completely abandoned.

Decades later, the complex was renovated and opened to tourism. This offered visitors the chance to step into the living history of the region and experience the daily life of the miners by walking through the original galleries.

Exploring the Mines

The visit begins aboard the charming train that will take us to the entrance of the Victoria Mine. Equipped with a helmet to protect us from low ceilings—which also make for great photos—we venture into the heart of the earth through the tunnels once used by miners.

At the start, an engaging video sets the scene, helping us get the most out of the experience. We learn why the mines were created and meet the brave miners who spent their youth in the dark, damp passages extracting the precious metal.

The underground adventure continues as we explore the mine. As we move through its cool, humid facilities, a vivid array of colors emerges from the darkness, revealing the veins of different minerals embedded in the rock walls.

Walking hundreds of meters through tunnels carved into the rock, we will discover the real harsh conditions endured by the miners in the facilities during years of work.
