San José Caves
Located in the heart of Castellón, the San José Caves are a natural wonder that takes you on a dreamlike journey through the depths of the earth.
Let's Take A Look Back
The history of the San José Caves runs as deep as the river that flows through them. The caves once served as a refuge for different communities during the Paleolithic era. Today, some cave paintings and engravings dating back more than 17,000 years are still preserved.
During Roman times, the caves began to be explored, but the people didn’t venture too far inside for fear of the river’s sudden floods.
In the 20th century, deeper explorations began. Some areas were dynamited to reveal new galleries covering the majestic underground treasure that we can admire today.
Exploring the Caves
Formed patiently over thousands of years by the slow erosion of water, the San José Caves reveal an extensive network of natural grottos. However, what makes them truly unique is the beautiful underground river that runs through them.
The adventure through one of Spain's most important geological treasures begins aboard a small boat that sails along the longest navigable underground river in Europe.
During the peaceful boat ride, you'll uncover local legends and admire spectacular rock formations as you pass through amazing spaces such as the Bat Hall, the Blue Lake, the Siphon Gallery, and the Cathedral.
As you travel through the darkness, the gentle lighting highlights the cave's natural beauty, adding a touch of mystery.
To complete the experience, you can take a short walk through the caves before boarding the boat again for the return journey.
