Benicasim
With a perfect location between the Mediterranean and the Desert de les Palmes, Benicasim is a destination with a balance of relaxation, culture, nature, and leisure.
Take a Look Back!
The origins of Benicasim date back to a small fishing village protected from pirate attacks by a watchtower.
At the end of the 19th century, Benicasim underwent a major transformation with the arrival of the railway. It was at this time that a group of wealthy families decided to turn the Benicasim coastline into their summer retreat, building a spectacular collection of modernist villas and mansions right on the beach—an exclusive refuge of luxury, gatherings, and glamour.
With the arrival of the 20th century, Benicasim became firmly established as a tourist destination, and in the 1990s it gained international recognition thanks to the Benicassim International Festival.
What to See in Benicasim
Benicasim is divided into three main areas: the beach and villa area, the historic town center, and the mountain area (Desert de les Palmes).
One of the places that makes Benicasim unique is the Pilar Coloma Promenade. On this pedestrian seafront walkway, you can find 51 historic villas built as summer homes between the 19th and 20th centuries that overlook the Mediterranean, offering a truly spectacular view.
Walking along the Route of the Villas of Benicasim, you will travel back to the Belle Époque and discover “the inferno”(hell), the older area known for hosting the wildest parties, or the more peaceful and elegant “celestial court" (heavenly court).
One of the most iconic villas in the area is Villa Elisa, which can currently be visited during exhibitions and cultural events.
Benicasim has 6 kilometers of fine-sand, calm-waters beaches. Some of the most popular options include:
- Voramar Beach is the most elegant and peaceful beach in Benicasim. It's sheltered by the nearby mountains and surrounded by some of the most beautiful villas.
- Torre de San Vicente Beach stands out for its fine sand and calm, protected waters in the heart of Benicasim's tourist areas. It derives its name from the Torre de San Vicente, a historic 16th-century watchtower of great significance.
- Serradal Beach is the ideal spot for those seeking tranquility and relaxation, as it offers a natural environment in an ecologically important area with protected dunes.
- Heliópolis Beach is the longest and widest beach in Benicasim. It is perfect for walking or cycling, as well as enjoying the day at one of its pleasant beach bars.
Leaving the beaches aside, another of the most surprising and important places in Benicasim is the Desert de les Palmes Natural Park. Contrary to what its name might suggest, it's not a desert, but rather a true green oasis. In this dense Mediterranean forest, you can go hiking, visit historical ruins, or enjoy its beautiful viewpoints, which become spectacular balconies overlooking the Mediterranean.
If you enjoy walking, one of the best activities in Benicasim is to follow the Vía Verde del Mar. This beautiful 6-kilometer route runs along the old railway line between Benicasim and Oropesa del Mar, where you can enjoy the best views of the Mediterranean.
If you travel to Benicasim in summer, you'll find find an unmatched nightlife in the beach area, as well as the chance to attend one of its festivals.
